Summer flats fishing in Key West, Florida

Report Date: July 17, 2015

Who would have guessed that leaving the dock at 6am would seem like a late start. We managed to make it through the high point of migrating tarpon season. Not to worry there are still tarpon around to be caught. However, we have transitioned back to our resident population.
Affording us the luxury of leaving the dock a bit later, as we have less seasonal guides around on the water to contend with.
Bonefish - I have been seeing a good amount of these fish. They're are tide dependent. When fishing for bonefish I would say, it's all about depth of water. It's not so much that these fish don't like deep water, it's just particularly difficult to see them in deeper water. Keep in mind they're football sized. A skinny water fish!

Permit - I've seen a fair amount of them so far this summer. I will say this last week has been quite tough.
As noted by any angler or guide who fished the Del Brown fly tournament. Otherwise I've been having good success with permit fishing.

Tarpon - I'm always in favor of the slick calm sultry summer mornings. Which based on the time of year you might get to see one of these great mornings. Tarpon love those condition when there is not a ripple on the water. Despite tough permit fishing as of late. We have filled that void with some sunrise tarpon fishing.

Check out the summertime fishing in Key West, Florida.
